Food For Life

Main focus of this project is to feed the hungry and provide nutritional supplements to the poorest section of the society especially to the aged, children and women. We have a target to make a hunger free society across ten KM circle of the temple.

Description

The Food for Life project by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) originated from a profound incident in 1974 when A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada, the founder of ISKCON, witnessed impoverished children in Mayapur, near Kolkata, fighting street dogs for scraps of food. Shocked by this sight, Srila Prabhupada envisioned a mission: that no one within a ten-mile radius of an ISKCON temple should go hungry. This incident spurred ISKCON's commitment to alleviating hunger through the distribution of prasadam (sanctified vegetarian food).

Objective:

The primary objective of the Food for Life project in Ghaziabad is to combat hunger and provide nutritious meals to underprivileged individuals within a 10 km radius of the ISKCON temple. By offering free meals, ISKCON aims to ensure that vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children, and women, have access to nourishing food on a daily basis.

Implementation:

Daily Distribution: From Monday to Saturday, ISKCON Ghaziabad's Food for Life initiative serves meals to 368 underprivileged individuals. This includes both lunch and breakfast.

Varied Menu: Each day, a diverse menu is prepared by dedicated volunteers. The meals are designed to be wholesome, balanced, and culturally appropriate, ensuring nutritional benefits for recipients.

Volunteerism: The project relies heavily on the commitment and dedication of volunteers who contribute their time and effort to cooking, packaging, and distributing the meals. Their involvement is crucial in maintaining the project's continuity and impact.

Problem Statement

In Ghaziabad, as in many parts of India, there exists a significant population that struggles with food insecurity. Economic challenges, poverty, and other social factors contribute to many individuals and families not having access to meals on a regular basis.
