Enhancing Groundwater Recharge through Rainwater Harvesting

Rainwater Harvesting Project for Groundwater Recharge and Sustainability in East Champaran District

Description

The Rainwater Harvesting Project aims to mitigate water scarcity issues in East Champaran district by implementing effective rainwater collection and groundwater recharge techniques. Given the region's dependence on agriculture and prevalent irrigation practices, the project intends to augment the available water resources, especially during dry seasons, through the installation of 27 rainwater harvesting plants across the East Champaran district. Each plant will cost Rs. 1,53,000

The initiative primarily focuses on capturing rainwater from rooftops and local catchments, replenishing groundwater aquifers, and reducing surface runoff to mitigate flooding and augment water availability during dry spells. By employing various rainwater harvesting techniques, the project aims to bolster water sustainability, agricultural productivity, and community resilience to water-related challenges.

Objectives:

  1. Implement rainwater harvesting systems to capture and store rainwater for groundwater recharge and direct usage.
  2. Alleviate water scarcity issues, especially during droughts and dry seasons, by augmenting groundwater tables.
  3. Reduce surface runoff, mitigate flooding, and improve water availability for agricultural and domestic purposes.
  4. Promote sustainable water management practices and community engagement in maintaining the installed rainwater harvesting infrastructure.

Impact:

  • Augmentation of groundwater tables leading to improved access to water for irrigation and domestic needs.
  • Mitigation of surface runoff, reducing flooding instances, and preserving road infrastructure.
  • Enhanced agricultural productivity and reduced dependency on erratic rainfall patterns.
  • Community empowerment through sustainable water management practices and self-sufficiency in water supply.

Problem Statement

East Champaran district faces water scarcity issues due to rapid runoff of rainwater, leading to depleted groundwater levels. The prevalent irrigation practices heavily depend on seasonal rains and limited groundwater availability, impacting agricultural productivity and community water supply.
